1) What conductor does the Blackburn ASP2 aluminum splice sleeve take, and can I use it on copper?
The ASP2 is a compression splice sleeve for 2 AWG aluminum conductor, and the pink color code is the identifier crews use on the reel to confirm that size at a glance. The body is aluminum with a tin plated surface, so it is intended for aluminum-to-aluminum splicing. For a copper run, or for an aluminum-to-copper transition, you want a copper or a bimetallic (AL/CU rated) connector instead, not this sleeve.
2) Is the Thomas & Betts ASP2 splice sleeve rated for medium voltage underground primary?
Rated to 35 kV, so it covers the usual 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV class primary distribution work, including URD splices, substation connections and industrial feeders. It is a bare compression sleeve, so the splice still needs its own insulation and shielding system (heat shrink or cold shrink splice kit) built over it to reach that class rating in service.

A compression sleeve like the ASP2 is the choice when you want a permanent, low-profile joint that will be insulated over and left alone, which is why it suits buried and vault primary splices. The tradeoff is tooling: you need the correct hydraulic crimper and die, and the joint is not reusable. A mechanical or bolted splice is the better pick when you have no press on site or need the connection to come apart later for testing or re-termination.
5) Why is the ASP2 splice sleeve tin plated instead of bare aluminum?
The tin plating on the aluminum body slows the oxide and galvanic corrosion that attacks bare aluminum at a connection point, which is what matters for a splice sitting in a vault, a handhole or a direct-buried run. It also helps keep contact resistance stable over the life of the joint. Use an oxide-inhibiting compound on the conductor as normal practice for aluminum terminations.
6) Is the Thomas & Betts ASP2 sold individually or in a bag?
