1) Can I use a Burndy HYLINK YS splice on 15kV or 25kV shielded cable?
Yes. The HYLINK YS long barrel splice is rated from 600V up to 35kV, so 15kV and 25kV primary conductors are inside its range. It is the copper compression barrel that joins the conductors; the insulation and shield rebuild over it (splice kit, tape or a molded body) is a separate part of the job and is not included with the connector.
2) Is the Burndy HYLINK splice copper only, or can I use it on aluminum conductor?
It is a solid copper body with a tin electroplated finish, which makes it a copper conductor connector. Use it for copper to copper splices. Aluminum or ACSR conductor calls for a connector rated for aluminum, not this one. The tin plating is there for corrosion resistance and stable contact over the life of the splice.
3) Is the Burndy YS long barrel splice UL Listed and CSA approved for utility work?
UL Listed to UL468A-468B and CSA Approved. It is not ETL certified, not UL Recognized and not cULus marked, so if a spec calls specifically for one of those marks this is not the part. RoHS compliance status is CM.
4) Can I splice two different conductor sizes with one Burndy YS splice?
No. Each YS splice is built for a single conductor size, one on each end, from 8 AWG through 250 kcmil. Joining two different sizes calls for a reducing splice, not this connector. Crimping an undersized conductor into an oversized barrel gives you a joint that will not hold mechanically or carry current reliably.
5) What is the difference between a long barrel splice and a standard barrel splice?
Long barrel means more contact length between the connector and each conductor, which is what you want on high voltage and on circuits where mechanical pull-out matters. The HYLINK YS is the long barrel version, overall length 3.57 inches (91mm) with a 1.58 inch barrel, and it takes multiple compression crimps rather than a single one. A short barrel connector is faster to crimp and fits tighter enclosures, but gives you less contact area. For 600V to 35kV distribution and feeder splicing, the long barrel is the usual call.
6) Will a Burndy YS splice fit inside my splice enclosure or handhole?
Plan on 3.57 inches (91mm) of straight length for the connector body itself, plus room on each side for the conductor entry and for whatever insulation rebuild you are using. In a tight junction box or a shallow handhole that overall length is the number to check first, since the barrel cannot be shortened.
7) What does the purple color code on a Burndy compression splice mean?
Purple is the die and conductor size identification code on the YS1C, the 1 AWG splice. Color coding on Burndy compression connectors tells the installer which barrel matches which conductor size and which die index to set on the compression tool, so you can confirm at the splice that the right connector and die are paired before you crimp.
8) Do I need a special crimp tool for a Burndy HYLINK YS splice, and is it included?
The splice ships as the connector alone. 10) Why is the Burndy HYLINK splice barrel chamfered, and does that change how I install it?
The barrel is chamfered at the entry so a stranded conductor slides in without the strands catching or brooming on the barrel edge. Practically, it means you can push a cleanly cut and brushed conductor straight in to the stop without having to twist or re-dress the strands. It does not change the crimp itself, which still needs the correct die for the conductor size.
