2) Why would I use an expansion coupling instead of a standard EMT coupling?
A standard set-screw or compression coupling locks two lengths of tubing rigidly together. An expansion coupling like the XJG64-EMT lets the conduit slide as it grows and shrinks, which is what you want where a 2 inch EMT run crosses a structural expansion joint or runs long distances outdoors or through an unconditioned space. Use the rigid coupling everywhere else; use this one at the joint where movement has to be taken up.
3) Does an EMT expansion coupling maintain electrical continuity across the joint?
Expansion fittings allow the tubing to move, so the sliding joint is not relied on as the equipment grounding path. Standard practice on a 2 inch EMT expansion coupling is to install a bonding jumper across it so the ground path stays continuous regardless of how far the coupling is extended. Order the jumper separately; it is not part of the XJG64-EMT.
4) How should the XJG64-EMT be set at installation so it has room to move both ways?
Position the coupling part way into its 4 inch travel rather than fully collapsed or fully extended, so the run can both grow and shrink from where you set it. In warm weather set it closer to extended; in cold weather set it closer to collapsed. Support the conduit so the tubing can slide freely at the fitting instead of being clamped tight on both sides of it.
