That is the total movement the XJG24-EMT absorbs, so it is set at installation with the slip section positioned for the expected movement in each direction rather than bottomed out at one end. Where a conduit run crosses a structural expansion joint or a long straight run that moves with temperature, this is the fitting that takes it instead of the couplings and straps.

No. The XJG24-EMT is built for EMT, and EMT ends are a different termination than the threaded ends on rigid metal conduit or IMC. A 3/4 inch rigid or IMC run needs a threaded expansion fitting instead. Ordering this one for a threaded run leaves you with a fitting that will not make up.

Ductile iron. That is a cast, higher-strength iron body rather than a stamped steel or die cast zinc fitting, which matters on exposed runs, parking structures, and anywhere the fitting takes mechanical abuse or supports the weight of the conduit either side of the joint.

A standard set screw or compression coupling locks two lengths of EMT rigidly together, which is what you want mid-run. Where the structure moves, that rigid joint is what breaks the raceway or pulls the tubing out of a box. An expansion fitting like the XJG24-EMT has a sliding section instead, 4 inches of it, so the raceway stays continuous while the two sides move. Use expansion fittings at structural expansion joints and on long exposed runs; use ordinary couplings everywhere else.

Treat the XJG24-EMT as a fitting that needs bonding attention. An expansion fitting has a sliding joint, and a sliding joint is not a reliable equipment grounding path, so where the EMT itself is being relied on as the equipment ground, an external bonding jumper is run across the fitting. If the run already carries a separate equipment grounding conductor, that conductor handles it.
