1) Can the Minerallac ES200S Uraseal splice kit be buried directly in the ground without conduit?
Yes. The ES200S 2-inch Uraseal kit is built for direct burial and watertight splices, using a permanent encapsulant that seals the connection rather than a tape or heat-shrink wrap. That is what lets it go underground without additional conduit protection over the splice itself.
2) What wire sizes will the Minerallac Uraseal 2" splice kit handle?
18 through 1 AWG, single or multi-conductor. The number of conductors the mold takes drops as the wire gets heavier: 20 conductors at 18-16 AWG, 12 at 14-12 AWG, 8 at 10 AWG, 6 at 8 AWG, and 2 conductors each at 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 AWG. So a heavy 1 AWG butt splice is a two-wire job in this size kit.
3) Is this splice kit rated for 277/480V circuits, or only low voltage?
The Uraseal ES200S is rated 600 volts or less, so it covers 120V, 240V and 277/480V building circuits as well as low-voltage control and landscape wiring. It is not a medium-voltage product.
4) Will a Uraseal encapsulant splice kit hold up on 90C-rated conductors like THHN?
Its maximum operating temperature is 90 degrees C, which matches the 90C insulation rating on conductors such as THHN/THWN-2. Do not use it where the splice will see sustained temperatures above that.
5) Does this Minerallac kit work for a branch splice or only a straight butt splice?
Both. The 2-inch Uraseal kit is used for butt splices and branch (tap) splices in single or multi-conductor wire. The encapsulant fills the mold around whatever connector configuration you have made, so the geometry of the splice is not the limiting factor; conductor count and gauge are.
6) Can I re-enter or re-splice a connection made with Shake N' Seal Uraseal later?
No. The insulation is a permanent encapsulant, meaning once it cures the splice is sealed for good. If you need a connection you can open for testing or future changes, use a splice box or a re-enterable gel-filled enclosure instead of this kit.
7) Does the Uraseal splice kit include the connectors, or do I supply those?
The kit is the sealing system: the mold and the two-part encapsulant you mix by shaking, in black. The actual crimp or set-screw connectors that join the conductors are a separate purchase, so order those to suit your wire gauge before you go to the trench.
