1) What is a blank face GFCI like the Leviton GFRBF-KW actually for?

It still takes three wires (line hot, neutral, ground) plus the load pair if you are feeding downstream, so the box has to have room for that count regardless of how thin the device is.
3) Do I need a separate grounding pigtail for the Leviton GFRBF-KW, or does it self ground?
A brass self grounding clip is included on the GFRBF-KW, so the yoke bonds to a grounded metal box through the mounting screw.
