Southwire SPH2/0-18 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Southwire SPH2/0-18 SIMpull head fit?
The SPH2/0-18 pulling head is sized for 2/0 AWG conductor. It is one size in a range that runs 1 AWG through 1000 kcmil, so for any other conductor size you order the matching head rather than forcing this one. Model number to specify is SPH2/0-18.
2) How much room does the SIMpull head add in the conduit?
Profile is the point of this head. It measures 1.6 in height and 3.9 in width with a 12.6 extension, which is the lowest profile Southwire offers, so the made-up end adds minimal diameter over the conductor itself when you are pulling through sweeps and a full conduit.
3) Why are SIMpull pulling heads made in staggered lengths, and what does the 18 inch mean?
The 18 in SPH2/0-18 refers to the head length. Southwire builds these heads in staggered lengths so that when you make up a multi-conductor pull the heads do not all bunch at the same point in the conduit, which keeps the bundle slimmer through bends. Pair different lengths across the conductors in one pull rather than using all the same length.
4) Do SIMpull heads come individually or in a pack?
They ship in cardboard inner packs of 5 heads. Handy for a pull, since a typical three-phase-plus-neutral-plus-ground run needs several heads at once, and the inner pack covers a four or five conductor make-up in one box.
5) Is the Southwire SPH2/0-18 pulling head steel or aluminum?
Steel, finished silver. That is the load-bearing part of a pull, so a steel body is what takes the rope tension without deforming the conductor termination. Each head weighs 0.519.
6) Are SIMpull pulling heads meant for commercial feeder pulls or residential work?
Classified for commercial use. At 2/0 AWG you are typically in service entrance or feeder territory in commercial and multi-family work, which is where these heads earn their keep by cutting the time spent taping up a basket grip or hand-made head.
