Metallics CT20SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Metallics CT20SS cable tie hold up outdoors or in a washdown area?
The CT20SS is made from 316 stainless steel, which is the grade used where chlorides and moisture are in play: coastal exteriors, wastewater plants, food and beverage washdown, marine and chemical areas. Unlike nylon ties it won't degrade from UV exposure or heat, so it's the right pick for outdoor cable runs and rooftop conduit bundling.
2) What is the tensile strength of the Metallics CT20SS cable tie?
150 lb minimum loop tensile. That's enough for bundling heavy conductor groups, strapping cable to ladder tray or securing signage and tags to poles. If your application is carrying structural or suspension load rather than bundling, a tie is the wrong part regardless of rating.
3) Do I need a special tool to install a 316 stainless steel cable tie?
Yes. Stainless ball-lock ties like the CT20SS are tensioned and cut with a stainless tie tool, which pulls the tail tight and shears it flush at the head. Pulling by hand with pliers leaves a sharp protruding tail and won't reach the rated 150 lb loop strength. The tool is a separate purchase, not included with the ties.
4) Can I use a 316 stainless cable tie instead of nylon in a plenum or high-temperature area?
Yes, and that's a common reason to specify it. Nylon ties are limited by temperature and embrittle with UV and age; the stainless CT20SS doesn't. It's the usual answer for plenum ceilings, boiler rooms, engine spaces and exterior runs. Indoors in a dry, conditioned space with no fire or UV concern, a standard nylon tie is cheaper and faster to install.
5) Is a 316 stainless tie different from a 304 stainless tie for a coastal install?
Yes, and it matters. The CT20SS is 316, which contains molybdenum and resists pitting from salt spray and chlorides. 304 stainless ties are fine inland and indoors but will show rust staining in marine air or around pool chemicals. For anything within reach of salt spray, specify the 316.
