Viega 25051 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a MegaPressG fitting on gas lines?
MegaPressG is Viega's gas-rated press system, and the 25051 is a MegaPressG carbon steel coupling for 1-1/2 inch black iron pipe. Standard MegaPress (non-G) fittings use a different sealing element and are not the gas version, so do not mix the two on a fuel gas run.
2) Is the Viega 25051 a stop or no-stop coupling, and why does that matter on a repair?
It is a no-stop coupling. Without an internal tube stop, the fitting can slide along the pipe, which lets you drop it over an existing run to make a repair or tie-in instead of cutting the line apart and springing pipe into place. On a stop coupling each pipe end butts an internal shoulder, which sets insertion depth for you; with the no-stop version you have to mark and control insertion depth on both sides yourself before pressing.
3) Will a MegaPressG coupling work on my existing threaded black iron pipe?
Yes, as long as the pipe is 1-1/2 inch carbon steel (black iron) pipe. The 25051 presses onto the pipe OD rather than threading on, so you cut the pipe clean, deburr, mark insertion depth and press. You do not need to cut new threads, but you do need enough straight, undamaged pipe at each end to seat the fitting.
4) What does Smart Connect technology do on a Viega press fitting?
Smart Connect is Viega's feature that makes an unpressed connection detectable: during pressure testing an unpressed fitting leaks noticeably rather than holding, so a missed joint shows up before the wall closes. It is built into the 25051 coupling.
5) How much clearance do I need to install a 1-1/2 inch MegaPressG coupling in a tight chase?
The fitting body is 4.634 inches long and 2.437 inches across, so plan for that envelope plus room to get the press jaw fully around the fitting and square to the pipe. In a congested chase the jaw swing, not the coupling, is usually the limiting factor.
6) What is the Viega 25051 made of and where is it manufactured?
Carbon steel body, made in Germany. Carbon steel is matched to black iron pipe systems; for copper or stainless runs you would be looking at a different Viega press line, not this fitting.
7) How heavy is a 1-1/2 inch MegaPressG coupling for estimating a large fitting order?
Each 25051 coupling weighs 1.124 lbs, which is worth knowing when you are pricing freight on a multi-hundred-piece MRO or new-construction order.
