That is exactly what it is for. The two 1-1/4 inch press ends of the 25486 go onto 1-1/4 inch carbon steel (black iron) pipe with a press tool, no threading, cutting oil or open flame. The 1/2 inch branch stays female threaded for a conventional screwed connection, so you can tie a threaded branch into a pressed run.
