Viega 26016 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Viega 26016 MegaPressG fitting for gas piping or water?
MegaPressG is Viega's press line for gas, and the 26016 is a MegaPressG carbon steel reducer. Carbon steel press fittings in the MegaPressG line go on black iron gas piping, not on potable water. For water you want a copper or stainless press fitting instead.
2) What does FTG x P mean on the Viega 26016 reducer, and which end goes into my existing fitting?
FTG x P is a street-style press reducer. The FTG end is sized to slip inside another press fitting's socket like a male fitting-end, and the P end is a press socket that accepts 1 inch pipe. So the 26016 takes you from a 1-1/4 inch fitting outlet down to 1 inch pipe without needing a separate coupling.
3) I need to drop a 1-1/4 inch gas main down to a 1 inch branch. Is the Viega 26016 the right size?
That is exactly what the 26016 does: 1-1/4 inch on the FTG side, 1 inch on the press side. If both of your connections are to pipe rather than to a fitting socket, the FTG end will not work for you and you need a P x P reducing coupling in the same sizes.
4) What is Smart Connect on the Viega 26016 and does it mean I can skip pressing a joint?
Smart Connect is Viega's feature that lets an unpressed connection be identified during pressure testing, so a missed joint shows up before the system is turned over. It does not replace pressing. Every 26016 socket still has to be pressed with the correct jaw for the size.
5) Can I use the Viega 26016 reducer on copper or PEX?
No. The 26016 is carbon steel and is built for steel pipe. Putting a carbon steel fitting on copper creates a dissimilar metal joint and the socket dimensions are for iron pipe sizes, not copper tube. Use the matching copper or PEX press line for those materials.
6) What part number and country of origin should I put on my submittal for this Viega reducer?
Submit it as Viega 26016, MegaPressG carbon steel reducer, 1-1/4 inch x 1 inch, FTG x P. It is made in Germany.
