Viega 26555 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does P x FTG mean on the Viega MegaPress 26555 45 degree street elbow?
P x FTG means one end is a press socket that accepts 4 inch pipe, and the other end is a fitting-end (street) spigot sized to slip into another 4 inch press socket. That is what makes it a street elbow: you can press it straight onto a pipe run on one side and into the socket of another MegaPress fitting on the other, with no extra nipple between them.
2) Will a Viega MegaPress 4 inch elbow work on black iron / carbon steel pipe?
Yes. The 26555 elbow body is carbon steel, and MegaPress press fittings are made for carbon steel pipe runs, so it suits black iron pipe systems of the matching 4 inch size. It is not a copper or stainless fitting, so don't mix it into a copper press system.
3) What is Smart Connect on this Viega MegaPress fitting and why does it matter on a big 4 inch joint?
Smart Connect is the feature built into the 26555 elbow's sealing element that lets an unpressed connection show itself during pressure testing, so a missed joint gets found before the system is put in service. On a 4 inch main that matters, since one skipped press in a long run is both the easiest to overlook and the costliest to chase later.
