Viega 26775 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Viega 26775 MegaPress flange on copper or stainless pipe?
No. The 26775 is carbon steel and is made for carbon steel (black iron) pipe systems. Copper calls for a ProPress copper fitting and stainless calls for a stainless press fitting; pressing a carbon steel fitting onto other pipe materials is not a valid joint.
2) What does Smart Connect do on this Viega press flange?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-joint detection feature. Before pressing, the sealing element is intentionally designed to let a small amount of pressure escape at the connection, so an unpressed fitting shows itself during system test instead of after the walls close up. It does not replace pressing, and it does not make the joint serviceable without a press.
3) How much room do I need around the 26775 MegaPress flange, and how heavy is it?
The fitting measures 7.126 x 7.126 x 3.453 inches and weighs 8.157 lbs. Plan clearance for both the flange body and the XL press tool head around the pipe, and account for the weight when you are supporting the run near a pump, valve, or piece of equipment.
4) Why use a press flange instead of welding or threading a flange onto 2-1/2 inch steel pipe?
A press flange gives you a bolted, breakable connection to a pump, valve, or tank without hot work. On occupied buildings, mechanical rooms with no hot work permit, or retrofit work where you cannot drain and cut threads, the press joint goes on cold in seconds. Welding is still the route when a spec or an operating condition outside the press fitting's rating demands it, and threading remains the cheaper option on short, accessible runs.
5) Does the Viega 26775 MegaPress flange come with bolts and a gasket?
The 26775 is sold as the flange fitting itself. Flange bolts, nuts, and the flange gasket for the bolted face are separate line items, as is the mating flange on the equipment side. Add those to the order if you do not already have them on the job.
6) Is the Viega 26775 flange made in the USA?
No, it is made in Germany. Worth checking against your project if you are working under a domestic-content or Buy American procurement requirement.
