ASC Engineered Solutions 310054200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How are the three openings sized on the ASC 2 x 2 x 2-1/2 black malleable iron tee?
The run is 2 inch on both ends and the branch outlet is 2-1/2 inch, so it's a bull head tee: the branch is larger than the run. All three openings are female pipe thread (FPT). If you need the larger size on the run instead, this is not the fitting for that layout.
2) Is this tee UL Listed and FM Approved for fire sprinkler work?
It carries UL/FM recognition, which is what an inspector looks for on a wet or dry sprinkler branch line. The fitting is standard weight malleable iron built to ASME B16.3 for both dimensions and pressure rating. Confirm the pressure class on your hydraulic calculation matches the standard weight rating before you commit it to a sprinkler main.
3) Can I use a black malleable iron tee on a water line, or is it gas only?
Black malleable iron is the normal choice for natural gas and propane piping, fire sprinkler lines, and low pressure steam or compressed air. It is not the right pick for potable water, where the unplated black iron will rust. For domestic water, go to a galvanized or brass fitting instead. The black finish here is a mill coating, not a corrosion barrier for wet potable service.
4) Do I need a bushing to connect 2 inch pipe to the 2-1/2 inch branch on this tee?
Only if you're running 2 inch off the branch. The branch outlet is 2-1/2 inch female NPT, so a 2-1/2 x 2 reducing bushing or a reducing coupling gets you down to 2 inch there. If your branch line genuinely is 2-1/2 inch, thread it straight in, no reducer needed. The two run ends are already 2 inch.
5) What does the ASTM A-197 material spec mean for this fitting?
ASTM A-197 is the cupola malleable iron spec used for threaded pipe fittings. It's a more ductile, impact-tolerant casting than gray iron, which is why malleable fittings can be wrenched tight on a taper thread without cracking. The fitting is standard weight (STD) under ASME B16.3.
