Thomas & Betts 1257 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I need to go from 3 inch up to 3-1/2 inch at an enclosure hub. Is a female reducer the right part?
Only if the thread you are starting from is male. The 1257 is female on both ends, 3-1/2 inch down to 3 inch. If you are coming off a 3 inch male conduit thread and need to land in a 3-1/2 inch female hub, you want a male-to-female bushing or an increaser, not this reducer. Check which of your two threads is male before ordering.
2) Will the 1257 work on rigid metal conduit and IMC?
Yes, within the thread sizes it carries. The 1257 is a threaded malleable iron conduit fitting, so it mates with the NPT-style conduit threads cut on rigid metal conduit and IMC. It will not accept EMT, which is unthreaded and needs set-screw or compression fittings instead.
3) Is the 1257 reducer made of steel or malleable iron?
Malleable iron. That is the body material on the 1257, which is the usual choice for threaded rigid and IMC fittings where the fitting has to take mechanical abuse and thread torque without cracking.
4) Can I use the Thomas & Betts 1257 to reduce a 3-1/2 inch knockout on a panel?
No. A 3-1/2 inch knockout in sheet metal is a plain hole, not a thread, so there is nothing for the 1257 to thread onto. Reducing a knockout calls for reducing washers. The 1257 only works where there is an existing 3-1/2 inch male conduit thread.
5) How many Thomas & Betts 1257 reducers come in an order?
The 1257 is sold as a single fitting, one model with no size or finish options to pick. If you are reducing both ends of a run or standardizing several enclosures, count the openings and order one per transition.
