ASC Engineered Solutions 311017602 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this 3 inch malleable iron elbow UL listed and FM approved for fire sprinkler piping?
Yes, it carries UL/FM recognition, so it can be used on fire protection piping where a listed and approved fitting is required. It is a standard (STD) class galvanized malleable iron fitting, pressure rated per ASME B16.3.
2) Is the galvanizing on this ASC elbow hot dip, and will it hold up outdoors or in a wet system?
The zinc coating is applied to ASTM A-153, the hot dip galvanizing spec for hardware and fittings, over malleable iron made to ASTM A-197. That is the coating normally specified for damp, outdoor, and wet fire sprinkler service, and it matches galvanized pipe on the same run so you are not mixing coated and bare steel.
3) Is a standard (STD) class malleable iron fitting enough, or do I need extra heavy for my 3 inch line?
This ASC elbow is STD class, which is the common 150 class malleable iron fitting used on most threaded water, air, gas, and sprinkler piping. Its pressure rating is set by ASME B16.3. If your drawing calls out a 300 class or extra heavy fitting for higher working pressure, this is not the part for that spec.
4) How much does a 3 inch galvanized malleable iron street elbow weigh for hanger and support calcs?
Each 3 inch galvanized street ell weighs 6.26 lbs dry. Add that to your pipe weight and fluid weight when you size hangers or a trapeze at a change of direction.
