Southwire SPH3/0-18 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size is the Southwire SPH3/0-18 SIMpull Head made for?
The SPH3/0-18 is sized for 3/0 AWG conductor. It is a pulling head, one per conductor, so a four-wire 3/0 pull needs four heads. Southwire builds the SIMpull Head line in sizes from 1 AWG up to 1000 kcmil, so other conductor sizes in the same feeder get their matching head rather than this one.
2) Why do SIMpull heads come in staggered lengths, and will they fit through my conduit bodies?
The staggered length is the point of the design: each conductor's head sits at a different distance back from the pulling eye so the bundle enters the raceway nose to tail instead of as one fat block. Combined with what Southwire calls the lowest profile available, that is what gets a multi-conductor pull through bends and conduit bodies with less jamming. The 3/0 head itself is 1.6 by 3.9 inches with a 12.6 inch extension.
3) How many SIMpull pulling heads come in a pack?
They ship five to an inner pack, in cardboard packaging. Five works out well for a typical three-phase plus neutral plus ground feeder pull, where you are heading four or five conductors at once.
4) Is the Southwire 3/0 SIMpull pulling head steel or plastic?
Steel, finished silver. That matters for a pulling head because the whole pulling tension of the conductor transfers through it to the rope.
5) How much does one 3/0 SIMpull head weigh and how long is the shipping box?
Each head weighs 0.569 and the pack length is 23.6, with a master pack height of 4.5. Light enough that a five-pack is no handling problem on a lift or in a manhole.
6) Is this pulling head meant for commercial feeder work or residential jobs?
Commercial. A 3/0 head is feeder and service-size gear, the kind of pull you do in commercial conduit runs rather than a house rough-in.
