Watts 556032 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Watts LF3L 0556032 a T&P valve or pressure-only relief?
Pressure only. The LF3L 0556032 protects against overpressure and relieves at 75 psi; it does not provide temperature relief. If your water heater requires a combination temperature and pressure (T&P) valve, this is the wrong part, and you need a T&P model instead. It is commonly used on water heaters where a separate T&P valve already handles thermal protection, or on systems where only pressure protection is called for.
2) What size and thread do I need to pipe in the Watts 0556032 relief valve?
Both ends are 3/4 inch NPT. The inlet is 3/4 inch male NPT, so it threads into a female tapping on the heater or tank, and the outlet is 3/4 inch female NPT to take your drain line. No adapters needed if your tapping is a standard 3/4 inch female NPT port.
3) At what pressure does this 3/4 inch Watts relief valve open, and what is its maximum working pressure?
Factory set to relieve at 75 psi. The valve body is rated to a 150 psi maximum working pressure, and the series covers a 75 to 150 psi range, so the 0556032 is the low end of that range. If your system normally runs near or above 75 psi static, this valve will weep or discharge, and you want a higher set pressure or a pressure reducing valve upstream.
4) What relief capacity does the Watts 0556032 have, and will it cover my water heater?
Rated at 200,000 BTU per hour steam discharge capacity. Size by your heater's input rating: the relief valve capacity has to equal or exceed the heater's BTU/hr input, so this one covers heaters up to 200,000 BTU/hr input. A larger commercial heater needs a valve with a higher stamped capacity.
5) Is the Watts LF3L relief valve lead free for potable water?
The LF3L body is lead free copper alloy, which is what lets it go on potable domestic hot water. That is the difference between this and older brass relief valves that are restricted to non-potable service.
6) What is the temperature limit on this Watts poppet type relief valve?
210 degrees F maximum. That is the service limit for the valve, not a relief trip point, since the 0556032 relieves on pressure only and has no thermal element.
7) Does the 0556032 come with a test lever for annual maintenance?
It does. The test lever lets maintenance staff manually lift the poppet to verify the valve is free and discharging, which is the standard annual check on water heater relief valves in multi-family and institutional buildings. No tools needed to exercise it.
8) What else do I need to install this Watts relief valve besides the valve itself?
You supply the discharge piping. The outlet is 3/4 inch female NPT, so run full size 3/4 inch pipe from it, down, with no reducing, no valves in the line, and terminated to a safe point of discharge per local code. Thread sealant on the 3/4 inch male NPT inlet, and do not overtighten into the tank tapping.
9) Is the Watts 0556032 made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States, which matters on public works and institutional jobs carrying domestic sourcing requirements.
