1) What is a dead end FD box and where would I use the Thomas & Betts FD2-TB?
The FD2-TB is a single gang deep device box with 3/4 inch hubs and a dead end, meaning conduit enters from one direction only and the opposite end is closed off. Use it where a run terminates at a switch, receptacle or control device rather than passing through. Cast iron body, so it suits damp, wet and industrial locations where a stamped steel box would not hold up.
2) Is the FD2-TB a through box or does it only have one opening?
Dead end, so it is not a feed-through box. Conduit lands on one side and the far end is closed. If you need the run to continue past the device, order a through-feed FD configuration rather than the dead end version.
3) Will a standard switch or receptacle mount in the Thomas & Betts FD2-TB?
Yes. It is a one gang device box, so a single standard device (switch, receptacle, pilot light) mounts in it and takes an FD style single gang cover. Deep body gives extra room for wire fill and for devices with bulky bodies like GFCIs.
4) Does the FD2-TB come with a cover?
The FD2-TB is the box only. You order the cover separately and pick it to match the device: blank, single receptacle, duplex, GFCI or toggle switch, in an FD single gang pattern. Gasketed covers are what you want in wet locations.
5) What is the difference between an FD box and an FS box?
Same footprint and same cover pattern, different depth. FD is the deep version, FS is the shallow one. The FD2-TB is the deep style, which is what you pick when conductor count, wire nuts or a deep-bodied device would crowd an FS. Covers interchange between the two.
6) Can the FD2-TB be used outdoors or in a wash-down area?
The cast iron body is the reason these get specified for exterior walls, parking structures, plants and wash-down spaces. To keep it weatherproof you need a gasketed cover and either threaded rigid conduit into the hubs or sealed fittings. The box alone does not make the assembly watertight.
