1) What is the Thomas & Betts FD1-TB box used for?

Dead end means the box has hubs on one side only, so the conduit run terminates at the box instead of passing through. Use it at the end of a run. If you need conduit entering and leaving the same box, you want a through feed or a two, three or four hub FD body instead of the FD1-TB.
3) What size conduit does the Thomas & Betts FD1-TB accept?
The FD1-TB is tapped for 1/2 inch threaded conduit. Because it is a cast FD body, the hubs are threaded rather than knockouts, so you are landing rigid or IMC directly into the hub, or using a fitting to transition from EMT.

Yes. The FD1-TB ships as the box body only, so you add the cover that matches the device going in, a single receptacle, duplex, GFCI or toggle switch cover in the FD pattern, plus the gasket if the location is wet. Covers are not interchangeable with the flat covers used on stamped steel boxes.
5) Is a deep FD box like the FD1-TB better than a shallow FS box?
Depth is the only difference in the choice. The FD1-TB is the deep body, which gives you extra cubic capacity for conductor fill, wirenuts and bulkier devices like GFCI receptacles or dimmers. The shallow FS version of the same footprint is the one to use when wall projection is tight and you have few conductors. Both mount the same and take the same style of cover.
6) Can the FD1-TB cast box be used outdoors?
Cast iron is what makes it suitable for outdoor and wet location work, which is the reason this style is specified over sheet metal boxes on exterior conduit runs. To keep it rated for the location you still need the matching gasketed weatherproof cover, and threaded hub connections rather than open knockouts.
7) How many devices does the Thomas & Betts FD1-TB hold?
One. It is a single gang body, so it takes one duplex receptacle, one switch or one GFCI. For two devices side by side on a surface conduit run you need the two gang FD body.
