Metallics RSB72 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Metallics RSB72 stove bolt come with a nut, or do I need to order nuts separately?
A hex machine screw nut is included with each RSB72 bolt, so no separate nut order is needed. The nut is the hex machine screw style made specifically for machine screw threads, matched to the 3/8-16 thread.
2) Will a 3/8-16 thread match my existing nuts and tapped holes?
3/8-16 is the UNC coarse thread for 3/8 in. diameter, at 16 threads per inch, so it mates with any standard 3/8-16 coarse nut or tapped hole. It will not thread into a 3/8-24 fine hole.
3) Is the Metallics RSB72 Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No on both counts. The RSB72 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If the project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this bolt will not satisfy it.
4) What size driver do I need for the Metallics RSB72 round head stove bolt?
The head takes a #4 driver. It is a combination head, so a #4 Phillips bit works and so does a flat blade in the slot (slot width runs 0.081 to 0.094 in., slot depth 0.117 to 0.155 in.). The Phillips recess measures 0.374 to 0.387 in. diameter at 0.228 in. deep. Handy when a crew has one tool on the lift and not the other.
5) Is a zinc plated steel stove bolt like the RSB72 suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
Zinc finish over steel is a dry-location plating. It handles indoor electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, which is the application range Metallics lists for the RSB series. For wet, exterior, or corrosive environments, specify a stainless machine screw instead rather than zinc plated steel.
6) What is the tensile strength of the Metallics RSB72 machine screw?
60,000 psi minimum, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. That puts it in commercial machine screw territory for mounting boxes, straps, channel and equipment, not structural steel connections, where a graded hex bolt is what the drawing will call for.
7) Does the Metallics RSB72 stove bolt meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
Head and drive dimensions conform to ANSI B18.6.3, the standard for machine screws, and the material conforms to AISI 1006 to 1022. Those two lines are usually what a spec reviewer wants on a fastener submittal.
