Metallics JRM123 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and length is the Metallics JRM123 machine screw?
The JRM123 is a 3/8-16 x 2-1/2 inch round head machine screw, so 3/8 inch nominal diameter with 16 threads per inch (a coarse UNC thread) and a 2-1/2 inch shank under the head. It mates with any 3/8-16 tapped hole or nut.
2) Do I need a Phillips or a flat blade driver for these Metallics combo screws?
Either one. The head carries both a slot and a Phillips recess in the same head, so a flat blade or a #4 Phillips bit will drive it. That is handy on a service call where you only have one driver in hand.
3) Is the Metallics JRM123 Buy American or ARRA compliant for a federal job?
No. The JRM123 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries domestic sourcing requirements, this part will not satisfy them.
4) Are these zinc screws suitable for outdoor or wet locations?
These are zinc plated carbon steel, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. Zinc plating is a mild corrosion barrier for dry indoor and protected locations, panel work, strut, enclosures and equipment mounting. For sustained wet, washdown or exterior exposure, specify stainless machine screws instead.
5) How strong are these machine screws, and what can I hang off them?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is standard low carbon steel machine screw strength, fine for enclosures, device mounting, trim, fixture hangers and general equipment fastening. It is not a graded structural bolt, so anything the engineer has called out as Grade 5 or Grade 8 needs a different fastener.
6) How are the JRM123 screws packaged and is there a minimum order?
They come in a jar, with a minimum of 100 pieces per jar. Shipping weight on the jar is 7.54 lbs. Good buy for a shop that goes through one size repeatedly rather than a mixed job box.
7) Will a 3/8-16 machine screw thread into a strut channel nut?
Yes, provided the channel nut is a 3/8-16 nut. Strut channel nuts are sold by thread size, and 3/8-16 is one of the common ones, so match the nut's stamped size to the screw. The 2-1/2 inch length gives you plenty of thread to pass through a bracket plus the nut.
8) Do these machine screws come with nuts or washers?
No. The JRM123 is sold as screws only, 100 to a jar. If you are fastening through sheet metal or into strut rather than a tapped hole, order your 3/8-16 hex nuts, channel nuts, flat washers or lock washers separately.
9) What trades actually use a 3/8-16 combo round head machine screw?
Metallics lists the JRM series for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries. In practice that is strut and channel nut work, enclosure and panel mounting, hanger and bracket assembly, and equipment fastening into tapped holes or nuts.
