1) Is 3M Scotch 77 arc proofing tape adhesive, and how do I secure the wrap?
Scotch 77 is a non-adhesive, linerless tape, so it will not stick to itself or to the cable jacket. You wrap it on and then band or overwrap the ends to hold it in place. The upside of non-adhesive is no residue on the cable and no liner to strip while you work.

The backing is an intumescent elastomer: under the heat of an arcing fault it expands into a char layer that shields the cable underneath. It is used to protect most types of electrical cable from failures in an adjacent cable, in a manhole, vault, or cable tray run. It is flame retardant and self-extinguishing.
3) Is 3M 77 arc proofing tape UL Listed?
Yes, Scotch 77 is UL Listed and RoHS 2011/65/EU compliant. It is also made in the USA, which matters on jobs with domestic sourcing requirements.
4) Can I use this arc proofing tape outdoors or in a wet vault?
The tape is UV resistant, so exposed outdoor runs are within its range. Watch the temperature: minimum operating temperature is 0 degrees Celsius (32 F), so wrapping in freezing conditions is outside the rated range.
5) How much cable does one roll of 3M 77 cover, and how is it packed?
Each roll is 20 feet (6 m) long, packed one roll per carton and 10 rolls per case. Since arc proofing is normally applied in a half-lapped wrap, plan on roughly half that in finished cable length per roll, and buy by the case for a vault or tray project.
6) How long can I keep unused rolls of this tape on the shelf?
Shelf life is 5 years, so MRO and utility storerooms can stock it against future outage work without churning inventory. Store the black rolls out of direct heat.
