Overview
- Scotch Flame-Retardant Tape 77 has an intumescent elastomer backing that generates a thick, insulating charred buildup when exposed to high temperatures. The tape has a specially formulated adhesive that expands in fire to form a thick, char buildup between the flame and the cable. This firewall acts as a heat shield and flame barrier to protect the nearby cables and accessories. The splicing, insulating tape offers fault-arc protection to cable accessories and adjacent wrapped cables. UL Listed and RoHS 2011/65/EU Compliant.
- Tape measures 1-1/2 in x 20 ft x 30 mil
- For protecting most types of electrical cables when exposed to potential failures in an adjacent cable
- Conformability offers virtually wrinkle-free wrapping with minimal effort
- Scotch Tape 77 is a 30-mil thick, premium-grade, flame-retardant, electric arc proofing tape. This tape is 600V-rated and is suitable to protect most types of electrical cables when exposed to potential failures in an adjacent cable. It is designed with a flexible unsupported elastomer, which makes it easy-to-apply and easy-to-remove for cable inspection.

3M 77Black-1-1/2x20FT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does 3M Scotch 77 arc proofing tape actually do in a cable fault?
Scotch 77 has an intumescent elastomer backing that chars and expands when hit by high heat, building a thick insulating layer between the flame or arc and the cable. That char acts as a heat shield and flame barrier, so a fault in one cable does not take out the cables and accessories wrapped beside it. It is rated 600V and 30 mil thick.
2) Is 3M Scotch 77 tape sticky, and how do I keep the wrap in place?
It is a non-adhesive tape. The 77 is an unsupported elastomer that relies on conformable tension wrapping rather than glue, which is also why it strips off cleanly later when you need to open a splice for inspection. Because there is no adhesive bond, the wrap is normally banded or taped off at the ends to hold it.
3) Will Scotch 77 tape hold up in an outdoor or manhole location?
Yes, the 77 is UV resistant and self-extinguishing, so exposed vault, manhole and outdoor duct work is within its range. It also meets Consolidated Edison Co. Test EO-5343-14, which is the utility arc-proofing spec many distribution specs reference.
4) How many rolls of 3M 77 come in a case, and how is it packed for a stockroom?
Each carton holds one roll, and a full case is 10 rolls. For MRO stores standardizing on arc proofing, the tape carries a 5 year shelf life, so a case can sit on the shelf between outages without turning over.
5) Can Scotch 77 be used as regular electrical insulating tape instead of vinyl?
It is classed as an insulating and splicing tape and is 600V rated, but its job is arc and flame protection over cables and accessories, not general conductor taping. Since it carries no adhesive, it will not seat and seal like a vinyl electrical tape. Use vinyl or a rubber splicing tape for the electrical build-up, then overwrap with 77 for the fire and arc barrier.
