1) What conductor sizes does the 3M 8427-12P cold shrink insulator fit?
The 8427-12P covers conductors from 246 kcmil up to 394 kcmil (125 to 200 mm2). Anything smaller or larger than that window and the tube either won't grip or won't shrink down over the connector, so size the tube to the cable before you cut anything.
2) Can I use this 3M cold shrink tube on medium voltage shielded cable?
No. The 8427-12P is a 1 kV insulator for non-shielded cable. It's primary insulation for solid dielectric wire and cable splices rated to 1000 volts, single conductor. For anything above 1 kV or for a shielded MV splice you need a medium voltage cold shrink splice kit, not this tube.
3) Do I need a torch or heat gun to install the 8427-12P?
No heat, no tools. It's a cold shrink tube: you slide it into position and pull the core out, and the EPDM rubber contracts onto the splice on its own. That makes it workable in wet vaults, confined manholes, and anywhere an open flame isn't allowed.
4) Will this hold up in an unheated outdoor pull box through winter?
Operating range runs -40 to 90 degC (-40 to 194 degF), so freezing vaults and hot conduit runs are both inside the envelope. The EPDM compound carries no chlorides or sulfur, which is why it's used against copper and aluminum terminations without staining or corrosion concerns.
