3M 7000133546 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is this 3M FP-301 heat shrink UL listed for 600 volt work?
It carries the UL bug at 600 V and 125 degrees C (257 degrees F), under UL file E-39100. It also meets SAE-AMS-DTL-23053/5, Class 1 and is RoHS 2011/65/EU compliant without exemption. Note the two temperature figures are different jobs: 125 C is the UL bug rating, 135 C is the material's maximum operating temperature.
2) Is single-wall thin-wall tubing like FP-301 enough, or do I need dual-wall adhesive-lined for a direct-burial or wet splice?
FP-301 is single-wall thin-wall polyolefin. It gives you mechanical and dielectric covering, strain relief and color identification, but there is no adhesive liner inside, so it is not a moisture seal on its own. For a buried, submerged or weather-exposed splice you want an adhesive-lined dual-wall product instead. For panel wiring, harness bundling, wire marking and general strain relief on terminations, single-wall is the correct choice and it goes on faster.
3) Is this flame retardant tubing, and will it corrode the copper underneath?
Flame retardant, tested to the UL 224 all-tubing flame test, and non-corrosive, so it will not attack copper conductors, tinned terminals or connector plating over time. That combination is what lets it be used in panel and control-cabinet wiring rather than just general repair work.
4) How is this 3M heat shrink packaged, and how much do I get per case?
It ships as 48 in (1.22 m) straight sticks with a header label, 25 pieces per case, in black. Sticks rather than a spool means it hangs on a pegboard and cuts square without the memory curl you fight with reel stock, which is why it suits a shop bench or a service van rack. Total black tubing in a case works out to 100 feet.
5) Will 3M FP-301 tubing hold up as strain relief where a cable flexes?
Tensile strength is 2,400 psi, so it resists splitting and abrasion where a jacket enters a connector or a harness passes a bend. It is not a substitute for a proper strain-relief clamp on a moving cable, but as split-resistant covering over a termination it is what the FP-301 is built for.
6) Where is 3M FP-301 heat shrink tubing made?
Made in the United States. For federal, state and institutional procurement running domestic-preference requirements, that is the country of origin on record for the FP-301 line.
7) Can I use this black 3M tubing on fiber and CATV drops, not just copper power wiring?
Yes. Besides electrical wire harnessing and bundling, the FP-301 is used in access network work, FTTH, FTTB and CATV. Black is the standard choice there because it resists showing dirt and is the usual jacket-match color for drop cable. Just remember the 0.093 in recovered ID sets how small a fiber buffer or drop it can grip.
