3) Do I need to peel a liner off 2242, and does it stick to itself?
No liner to strip. 2242 is a linerless ethylene propylene rubber tape with a rubber-resin adhesive, and it is self-sticking, so it fuses to itself as you half-lap it and forms a continuous moisture-resistant mass over the splice. It is not a vulcanizing tape, so it fuses rather than chemically cures.
4) Can 3M 2242 tape be used outdoors or in direct sunlight?
It can. The ethylene propylene rubber backing is UV resistant, which is why 2242 is used on outdoor electrical installations, utility work and exposed cable terminations. Its top operating temperature is 90 C (194 F), so it also holds up on warm motor and generator leads.
5) Should I use rubber splicing tape or just vinyl electrical tape on a splice?
They do different jobs. 2242 rubber tape is the insulating and moisture-sealing layer: self-fusing EPR, 600 V, 750 V/mil dielectric strength, no liner. Vinyl tape is the protective overwrap that goes on top of it for abrasion and to hold a neat finish. On a splice you want both, rubber first, vinyl over it. The 2242 alone leaves a tacky rubber surface, which is fine inside an enclosure but not where it will be handled or abraded.
6) Is 2242 tape flame resistant for use inside panels?
Yes, 2242 is flame resistant and flame retardant, which is why it is specified for electrical panel insulation, cable splicing and industrial MRO. Note it is not classed as self-extinguishing.
