1) Can the RACO 252MS square box be mounted to metal studs, or is it wood only?
Both. The 252MS ships with an M-style bracket rated for metal or wood studs, so one part covers steel stud framing and wood framing on the same job. No separate bracket or box hanger is needed.
2) What cable types and sizes does the STAB-IT II connector on this RACO box accept?
The STAB-IT II connector takes 14/2 through 10/3 in flex, MC, MCI, MCI-A, MC-PCS, AC and HCF cable, and holds up to three cables in the one connector. Unlike a one-shot clamp, the STAB-IT II design lets you back a cable out and reuse the connector, which matters when a run gets re-pulled.
3) Will a 2-1/8 in. deep 4-11/16 box fit in a 2x4 stud wall?
Yes. Depth is 2.125 in., so it sits inside the 3-1/2 in. cavity of a 2x4 wall with room behind. Overall the box runs 4.85 in. by 6.546 in. including the bracket, so check your stud spacing and any insulation or sheathing before you set it.
4) Can I use this RACO box in a fire-rated wall assembly?
No. The 252MS carries no fire resistance rating, so it is not the box for a rated wall or ceiling assembly. For those openings you need a box and putty pad or listed fire-rated assembly that the rating documentation specifically covers.
5) Do I need a bonding jumper with this RACO box on a 600V circuit?
No. The 252MS is rated for use without a bonding jumper in circuits up to 600 volts, and it has a raised ground provision plus a pre-installed 8 in. solid #12 pigtail for the grounding connection.
6) Can I buy a single RACO 252MS box or do I have to take a case?
The 252MS sells in cartons of 25, which is also the minimum pack quantity. A full pallet is 1,000 pieces. If you are standardizing a building on one box, the pallet quantity is the number to quote against.
7) How many knockouts are on the RACO 252MS and what size?
Eleven TKO (tapered, two-step) knockouts plus one dedicated 1/2 in. knockout. That gives you plenty of entry points for added MC drops or EMT beyond the single STAB-IT II connector, which itself handles up to three cables.
8) Is the RACO 252MS a 1-gang or 2-gang box, and what cover do I need?
It is a 2-gang box in the 4-11/16 in. square body. A 4-11/16 square box takes a square cover sized to the body, so you will order either a flat 2-gang device cover or a raised plaster ring to match your wall finish depth. Covers and rings are a separate line item from the box.
9) Will the RACO 252MS work for a residential rewire or is it a commercial box?
It is specified for commercial use and the STAB-IT II connector is set up for flex and MC wiring, which is what commercial jobs run. If you are pulling NM (Romex) in a single-family rewire, this is more box than you need and the connector is not the right clamp for that cable. It does suit multi-unit residential, where MC is common.
10) Is this RACO square box a welded box or a drawn box, and does it matter?
Welded steel. Drawn boxes are formed from one piece and are typically shallower; a welded box like the 252MS is built up from sheet, which is how it gets to 2-1/8 in. depth and 42 cubic inches. Either way it is steel and cULus Listed.
