ASC Engineered Solutions 311068209 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are all three openings on the 4 inch galvanized malleable iron wye the same size?
Yes, all three ports are 4 inch. The wye is a 4 x 4 x 4 configuration with female pipe thread on every outlet, so the branch takes the same 4 inch threaded pipe as the run.
2) Will a galvanized malleable iron wye hold up in a wet or outdoor line?
The galvanizing is hot dip to ASTM A-153, which is the heavy coating spec rather than a plated finish, so it stands up in wet interior lines, underground transitions and exposed outdoor runs better than black iron. The body itself is malleable iron to ASTM A-197.
3) Should I use a wye or a tee for a 4 inch drain or sprinkler branch?
A wye brings the branch in at an angle instead of at 90 degrees, so flow turns gradually rather than hitting a square shoulder. That matters on drainage and on lines you may need to rod out. Use a tee where the branch is a simple takeoff on a pressurized line and direction of flow does not matter. This one is a 4 x 4 x 4 threaded wye in galvanized malleable iron.
