It joins 4 inch S&D (sewer and drain) pipe to 4 inch DWV pipe. One end is an S&D hub, the other is a DWV hub, and both are solvent-weld sockets. That transition matters because S&D and DWV pipe of the same nominal size have different outside diameters, so a plain DWV coupling will not take an S&D pipe end.
2) I have 4 inch sewer and drain pipe coming in from outside and 4 inch DWV inside. What fitting do I need?
That is exactly what this coupling is for. The S&D hub takes the sewer and drain pipe, the DWV hub takes the interior DWV pipe, and the two glue up into one straight in-line transition. It is a coupling, so it keeps the run straight, no change of direction and no reducing.
3) Can I glue this with regular PVC solvent cement?
Yes. Both hubs are standard solvent-weld sockets and take ordinary PVC cement and primer. The body is molded PVC, so no threading, no gaskets, no clamps. Clean and dry both pipe ends, prime, cement, and hold the joint briefly so it does not push back out.
