Metallics JTS2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a #4 x 3/8 in. sharp point tapping screw hold in sheet metal without a pilot hole?
A Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point is made to start in thin sheet metal and form its own thread as it drives, which is why it is used in device boxes, duct and light fixture work. The 24 threads per inch on the JTS2 is the coarse Type A pitch that bites in thin gauge. In heavier steel you still want a pilot hole, and the screw is hardened to Rockwell C28-38 so the threads do not roll over.
2) Are Metallics JTS2 tapping screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JTS2 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your federal, state or institutional contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced fastener.
3) How are Metallics JTS2 screws packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100 pieces, and 100 is the order minimum. Jar weight is 0.17 lbs. Good counter stock for a service van where you are grabbing a handful at a time rather than opening a bulk box.
4) Are zinc plated steel tapping screws like the JTS2 okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The JTS2 is carbon steel with a zinc finish, made from AISI 1016-1024 steel. Zinc plating handles indoor and dry locations, interior boxes, panels and fixture work. For wet locations, exterior runs or anywhere with chemical exposure, specify a stainless tapping screw instead, because zinc plating will eventually give up.
5) Do Metallics JTS2 screws meet a published fastener standard?
Yes. Head dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2013 and the threads follow ASME B18.6.4, the tapping screw standard. That matters on a submittal where the spec calls out a dimensional standard rather than a brand. Note that Metallics flags #9 diameter dimensions as independent of ASME B18.6.4; the #4 x 3/8 in. JTS2 is not affected.
6) What trades actually use a #4 x 3/8 in. combo pan head tapping screw?
Metallics lists the JTS2 for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries. In practice that is device box and plate screws, securing sheet metal to duct and plenum, mounting small brackets and clamps, and fixture assembly. The 3/8 in. length keeps the point from punching through where there is little clearance behind the panel.
