Progress Lighting P851-ICAT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size ceiling hole do I cut for the Progress Lighting P851-ICAT 5 inch recessed housing?
Cut a 5.5 inch ceiling opening for the P851-ICAT. That is the rough opening the housing is built around, so trim rings for 5 inch recessed cans will cover it. Plan the joist bay too: the housing with its bar hangers measures 13.25 x 14.75 x 7.25 inches, so you need about 7-1/4 inches of plenum depth above the ceiling plane.
2) Can this recessed housing be buried in blown-in or batt insulation?
Yes. The P851-ICAT is an IC rated air-tight housing, so it can sit in direct contact with insulation and it is sealed against air leakage between the conditioned space and the attic. That is the housing you want in an insulated ceiling or top floor; a non-IC can has to be held back from insulation with a dam.
3) Is this housing for new construction or can I retrofit it into an existing ceiling?
New construction only. The P851-ICAT mounts to the framing with its hanger bars before the ceiling goes up, which is why the overall assembly runs 13.25 x 14.75 inches across the joist bay. For an existing finished ceiling you need a remodel housing that clips to the drywall through the cut hole.
4) What bulb does the Progress P851-ICAT recessed can take, and what is the max wattage?
One medium base E26 lamp, 75W maximum, on 120V. That is the standard screw base, so an LED retrofit lamp or BR/PAR incandescent in E26 will thread right in. Do not exceed the 75W rating with an incandescent.
5) Can I use this recessed housing in a bathroom with a shower, or on a covered porch?
No. The P851-ICAT is cULus listed for dry locations only, so keep it out of showers, tub enclosures, and any exterior or covered outdoor ceiling. Those openings need a damp or wet location listed housing.
6) Will this Progress housing meet California Title 24 for a new residential build?
No. The P851-ICAT is a 120V incandescent housing with a medium base socket. It carries Title 20 compliance but is not Title 24 or JA8, and it is not Energy Star or listed as energy efficient. For California new residential recessed lighting you need a JA8 compliant LED luminaire instead.
7) Is this recessed housing hardwired, and does it include an outlet box mount?
Hardwired, 120V line voltage, with no plug and no outlet box mounting hardware included. Branch circuit power has to be run to the integral junction box, so this is an electrician's install, not a plug-in fixture.
8) I need to standardize recessed cans across a multi-family build. Is this housing durable enough for commercial corridors and units?
The P851-ICAT is a steel-bodied utilitarian housing, which is the normal spec for repeat installs in apartments, offices, and retail where the trim does the aesthetic work. Since it is dry location listed, use it for interior ceilings and spec a damp-rated housing for bath and exterior soffit locations in the same building.
9) Can this recessed can be aimed up, like in a soffit or floor-level application?
No. It is a ceiling-mount downlight only and is not a convertible fixture, so there is no up-mount configuration and no second mounting kit in the box.
