Metallics JRM71 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for the Metallics JRM71 combo machine screw?
Either a flat blade or a #3 Phillips. The JRM71 has a combination head, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so whatever is already on the truck works. Phillips recess measures 0.295 to 0.308 inch diameter and 0.161 to 0.187 inch deep; the slot runs 0.072 to 0.084 inch wide and 0.099 to 0.132 inch deep.
2) Will a 5/16-18 machine screw thread into my existing panel or box tapped holes?
The JRM71 is a 5/16-18 thread, 18 threads per inch, which is the standard coarse (UNC) pitch for 5/16 inch. It mates with any 5/16-18 tapped hole or nut. If the hole in your equipment is 5/16-24 fine thread, this is the wrong screw.
3) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public job?
No. The JRM71 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is multiple. On federally funded work with a domestic sourcing clause, you need a domestically produced fastener instead.
4) How much does the round head stand up off the surface, and how wide is it?
Head height on the JRM71 runs 0.198 to 0.216 inch and head diameter 0.557 to 0.59 inch. That domed round profile sits proud of the surface, so if you need the fastener flush in a countersunk hole, go to a flat head instead. The 0.59 inch maximum head also needs to clear any adjacent bracket or raceway edge.
5) Is a zinc plated steel machine screw okay outdoors or in a wet location?
Zinc plated steel is a dry, indoor-grade finish. The JRM71 is AISI 1006-1022 carbon steel with zinc plating, which handles interior panel, box, and device work but will corrode in exposed, washdown, or coastal conditions. For those, specify a stainless machine screw in the same 5/16-18 x 1-1/4 size.
6) How strong is the Metallics JRM71 screw, and can I torque it down hard?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi, with a case hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is standard low-carbon machine screw strength, fine for mounting panels, devices, straps, and brackets. It is not a grade 5 or grade 8 cap screw, so do not use it where a structural bolt is specified on the drawing.
7) How are the JRM71 screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and a jar is the order minimum. Jar weight is listed at 3.11 lbs. Metallics does offer other sizes and quantities of the combo line by request.
8) What trades and jobs is this combo machine screw actually meant for?
Metallics built the JRM line for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, the kind of 5/16-18 panel, strap, and enclosure fastening those trades do daily. The dual slotted and Phillips head is the reason it travels well on a service van: one screw, either driver. Metallics was the first US fastener company to offer a full combo line, back in 1985.
