Metallics JRM122SLT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread does the Metallics JRM122SLT machine screw use, and will it take a standard 5/16-18 nut?
It's a 5/16-18 thread, 18 threads per inch, which is the standard UNC coarse pitch for 5/16 inch diameter. Any standard 5/16-18 nut or tapped 5/16-18 hole will accept it. Length is 2-1/2 inches.
2) How much does the round head sit above the surface on this 5/16-18 slotted screw?
The round head measures 0.198 to 0.216 inches in height and 0.557 to 0.59 inches across. That head stands proud of the surface by design, so if you need the fastener flush in a countersunk hole, a round head is the wrong choice - go to a flat head instead.
3) Is this screw strong enough for mounting electrical enclosures and bracket work?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum with a hardness of Rockwell B70-B100, made from AISI 1006-1022 low carbon steel. That's standard commercial machine screw strength, fine for enclosure mounting, panel and bracket work. It is not a graded structural bolt, so don't substitute it where a drawing calls out a Grade 5 or Grade 8 fastener.
4) Do these screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a public project?
Metallics lists the JRM122SLT as ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant. Country of origin is China. On federal or state work where the spec draws a hard domestic-melt-and-manufacture line rather than an ARRA compliance flag, get the compliance basis confirmed against your contract language before you submit it.
5) Will zinc plated steel machine screws hold up outdoors or in a damp location?
The JRM122SLT is zinc plated carbon steel, which handles dry indoor and protected locations well. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating, not a sealed one, so sustained wet exposure, washdown areas or coastal air will eventually bloom white rust and then red. For those spots specify a stainless machine screw in the same 5/16-18 x 2-1/2 size instead.
6) How do these Metallics machine screws ship, and is there a minimum order?
They come in a jar of 100 count, and 100 is the order minimum. Total shipping weight is 5.15 lbs for the jar. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities are available by request.
7) What's the difference between a machine screw like this and a sheet metal or self-tapping screw?
A machine screw has a uniform straight 5/16-18 machine thread and no point - it needs a pre-tapped hole or a mating nut. Self-tapping and sheet metal screws cut their own thread in an untapped pilot. At 2-1/2 inches with a round slotted head, the JRM122SLT is meant for through-bolting with a nut or threading into tapped stock in enclosure, panel and device work.
8) Does the JRM122SLT come with nuts or washers?
No. It's the screw only, 100 per jar, 5/16-18 x 2-1/2 inches in zinc plated steel. Order 5/16-18 nuts and 5/16 flat or lock washers separately if the assembly needs them.
