Metallics JFM68 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 6-32 machine screw thread into a standard electrical device box or switch plate?
Yes. The Metallics JFM68 is a 6-32 UNC screw, 32 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the thread used for device mounting in outlet and switch boxes and for cover plates. At 1-1/4 in. long it gives extra reach when a device sits proud of a box or you are shimming through a plaster ring.
2) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JFM68 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it.
3) Does a flat head screw sit flush, and how big is the head on a 6-32?
Flat head means a countersunk head that sets flush with the surface, so you need a countersunk or chamfered hole. On the JFM68 the head measures 0.238 to 0.262 in. across and 0.069 to 0.083 in. high. If your hole is not countersunk, a pan or round head is the better choice.
4) How many 6-32 x 1-1/4 in. Metallics screws come in a jar?
These ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. Useful for a service truck or an MRO crib where you are pulling a handful at a time rather than buying by the box.
5) Are zinc plated steel machine screws OK outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plating on steel is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior service. The JFM68 is zinc plated AISI 1006-1022 steel, which is fine inside panels, boxes and enclosures but will rust in wet, exterior or washdown locations. For those, use a stainless machine screw of the same 6-32 x 1-1/4 size.
6) How much load will a 6-32 machine screw hold?
550 lb minimum tensile is the rated figure for this screw, with a hardness of Rockwell B70-B100. That is plenty for mounting devices, covers, straps and small brackets. It is a tensile rating on the fastener itself, not a rating for whatever you are threading into, so the tapped material or nut usually governs.
7) Is this screw made to a recognized dimensional spec so it interchanges with other brands?
Yes. Head, slot and body dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-1998 and the threads follow ANSI/ASME B1.1 UNC, so a 6-32 x 1-1/4 flat head slotted screw from another maker built to the same standards will interchange.
8) What screwdriver do I need for these, and will a power driver work?
Slotted drive only, no Phillips or square recess. The slot runs 0.039 to 0.048 in. wide and 0.024 to 0.038 in. deep, so a properly ground flat blade that fills the slot is what you want. Slotted heads cam out easily under an impact driver, so hand driving or a low-speed clutch is the safer bet.
9) What trades actually use these zinc machine screws?
Metallics lists the field application as the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries. In practice that is device and cover mounting, panel and enclosure hardware, strap and clamp fastening, and control board work. The zinc finish is also common on screws used in electronics assembly.
