Metallics JTSF9 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Type A tapping screw hold in sheet metal without a pilot hole or a nut?
The JTSF9 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point, so it starts in thin sheet metal and forms its own thread in a pilot hole as it drives. It is not a self-drilling screw, so you still punch or drill a pilot in sheet steel. No nut or insert is needed, the sheet itself carries the thread.
2) Can these tapping screws be used on a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements?
No. The JTSF9 is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin reported as multiple. For a project with domestic content requirements you need a fastener line certified to that requirement instead.
3) What driver bit do I need for Metallics JTSF9 tapping screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The JTSF9 has a Phillips recess 0.168 in. across and 0.094 in. deep, so a #2 driver seats fully; a #1 will cam out and a #3 won't bottom in the recess.
4) What thread pitch do these Metallics tapping screws have, and will they match existing screws in my panel?
18 threads per inch, cut to ASME B18.6.4, with a gaging diameter of 0.22 in. If the screws already in the enclosure are standard Type A sheet metal screws of the same size, the new ones will run in the same formed threads. Note that the #9 diameter dimensions are independent of ASME B18.6.4 even though the thread form follows it.
5) How much torque can these screws take before the head strips?
24 lb-in minimum torsional strength, with a case hardness of Rockwell C28-38. That is a hand-driver or clutched-driver fastener, not something to run down with an impact driver on full setting, which is the usual way a #6 tapping screw snaps or shears the recess.
6) Are zinc-plated steel tapping screws okay outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JTSF9 is zinc-plated steel made from AISI 1016-1024 carbon steel. Zinc plating is a mild indoor and sheltered-use coating, fine for panels, enclosures, duct and interior MRO work. For wet exterior, coastal or corrosive duty, specify stainless rather than zinc-plated carbon steel.
7) How do these Metallics JTSF screws come packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
Sold by the jar of 100, which is the order minimum. One jar weighs 0.4 lbs. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
8) What trades actually use a 1-1/4 in. flat head Phillips tapping screw like this?
Metallics builds the JTSF series for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades: mounting devices and straps to sheet metal, fastening into duct and enclosure flanges, and general MRO panel work. The 1-1/4 in. length gives enough reach to pass through a strap or bracket and still form full thread in the base sheet.
