Metallics JDWSR1C – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use these drywall screws in metal studs?
No. These are coarse thread (UNC) screws with a sharp point, which is the wood-framing configuration. For steel studs you need a fine thread drywall screw with a self-drilling or needle point, otherwise the sharp point walks and the coarse thread strips the light-gauge steel.
2) Are Metallics JDWSR1C screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No on both counts. The JDWSR1C is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries domestic sourcing requirements, these will not qualify.
3) What driver bit do I need for the JDWSR1C drywall screws?
A #1 square drive bit. The recess is square, nominally 0.090 to 0.106 in. wide and 0.055 to 0.071 in. deep, so a #1 Robertson-style bit seats fully. A Phillips #2 will not hold in it. Square drive is the reason these cam out far less than a Phillips drywall screw when run with a screw gun.
4) Will the head sink flush enough to tape and mud over?
That is what the bugle head is for. The head runs 0.315 to 0.347 in. across and only 0.020 to 0.031 in. high, with a curved underside that dimples the paper rather than tearing it, so the head sits just below the face and fills with a skim of compound.
5) How many drywall screws come in a jar, and can I buy fewer?
The JDWSR1C ships as a 100 piece jar, and 100 is the order minimum, so one jar is the smallest buy. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Is a black phosphate drywall screw okay for exterior or damp areas?
Keep these inside. Black phosphate is a mild corrosion coating meant for interior drywall and wood work, not a weathering finish. For exterior sheathing, soffits, or anywhere exposed to moisture, use a coated exterior or deck screw instead.
7) How hard are these screws, and will they snap driving into dry framing?
The screws are heat treated to Rockwell C45-64 from AISI 1018 steel, so they are hard enough to drive without the threads deforming in seasoned lumber. Hardened drywall screws are brittle in shear by nature, which is why they fasten board and are not a structural or framing fastener.
8) What is the thread pitch on these #6 coarse drywall screws?
Threads run 8 to 10 per inch, UNC coarse spacing. That wide pitch is what lets the screw bite wood framing fast and pull the board tight in one pass. Note there is no single industry standard for drywall screw dimensions, so Metallics gives these as guide values with slight deviations acceptable.
