Metallics JTEK10P – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What metal thickness can the Metallics JTEK10P self-drilling screw drill through?
The JTEK10P is rated for panel thicknesses of 0.035 to 0.090 inch, which covers typical sheet metal gauges used for duct, strut channel covers, and metal stud track. Thicker steel than 0.090 inch is outside what the #2 drill point is specified to drill, so step up to a heavier drill-point screw for structural steel.
2) Does a #6 x 1/2 in self-drilling screw need a pilot hole in sheet metal?
No pilot hole. It's a Type BSD self-drilling and tapping screw, so the drill point cuts its own hole and the 20 threads-per-inch thread taps as it goes, in one pass with a driver.
3) Can I use these screws on a federal or Buy American job?
No. The JTEK10P screws are not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a project with domestic sourcing requirements you'll need a domestically manufactured drill screw instead.
4) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTEK10P screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is a Phillips drive with a 0.159 inch recess diameter and a gaging depth of 0.055 to 0.080 inch, so a worn or oversized bit will cam out before the screw seats.
5) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JTEK10P?
They ship in a jar with a 100-piece minimum, and the packed jar weighs 0.25 lbs. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Will the pan head on these self-drilling screws sit flush, or does it stand proud?
Pan head, so it sits on the surface rather than countersinking. Head height runs 0.087 to 0.097 inch with a head width of 0.256 to 0.270 inch, which gives good bearing on sheet metal but means you need that clearance above the panel. For a flush surface you want a flat or wafer head instead.
7) Are Metallics JTEK10P screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish, which is a general indoor and protected-use plating. For sustained exposure to weather or washdown, use a stainless self-drilling screw rather than zinc-plated steel.
8) Will these screws snap when driven with an impact driver?
Case-hardened to Rockwell C32-40 with a 24 lb-in minimum torsional strength, so they hold up to normal powered driving. Impact drivers can still exceed that on a #6 shank once the screw bottoms out, so back off the trigger as the head seats.
9) What standards do the Metallics JTEK #6 drill screws conform to?
Head and recess dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010, and the thread conforms to SAE J78-2013. Worth noting: SAE J78 does not cover #7 diameter drill screws, so a #7 substitute has no corresponding thread spec.
