Metallics DWS4M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are fine thread drywall screws like the Metallics DWS4M for wood studs or metal studs?
Fine thread is the metal stud screw. The DWS4M runs 18 threads per inch with a sharp point, and Metallics lists its field applications as hardwood, light gauge steel and light gauge aluminum. For standard wood studs, a coarse thread drywall screw bites faster and holds better in softwood framing. Use the fine thread version on light gauge steel framing and on hardwood.
2) Are black phosphate drywall screws OK for exterior or damp locations?
No. Black phosphate is a dry interior finish only. The DWS4M is AISI 1018 steel with a black phosphate coating, which gives mild corrosion resistance for handling and storage but will rust in wet or exposed conditions. For exterior sheathing, soffits, or bath and kitchen work with moisture exposure, specify a corrosion resistant coated or stainless fastener.
3) What driver bit do I need for Metallics DWS4M drywall screws, and is one included?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is a Phillips drive sized for a #2 driver, with a recess depth of 0.106 inch and recess diameter of 0.176 to 0.201 inch. A free #2 drive power bit ships with the screws, so you do not need to order one separately.
4) How many Metallics DWS4M screws come in a jar and what is the minimum order?
The DWS4M is packed in a jar of 1,000 screws, and 1,000 is the order minimum. The jar weighs 4.7 lbs. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
5) Will the bugle head on these drywall screws seat flush without tearing the paper face?
That is what the bugle head is for. The head on the DWS4M measures 0.315 to 0.347 inch across with a head height of 0.020 to 0.031 inch, so the curved underside compresses the paper and dimples it rather than cutting through, as long as you set your driver clutch so the head sits just below the surface. Note that there is no single industry standard for bugle head or drywall screw dimensions, so slight deviations from these figures are normal.
6) Do Metallics DWS4M drywall screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The DWS4M is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with a country of origin of multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing clause, this fastener will not satisfy it.
7) Do these drywall screws snap when driven into steel studs?
The DWS4M is case hardened to Rockwell C44, which is the hardness range drywall screws are run at so the point can pierce light gauge steel without the shank twisting off. Driving at high speed into heavier gauge than the screw is rated for is what breaks them, so keep it to light gauge steel and aluminum framing and hardwood.
