Metallics JTSS2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTSS2 square drive tapping screws?
A #1 square (Robertson) bit. The JTSS2 calls for driver size 1R, and the recess measures 0.091 inch across the flats with a gaging depth of 0.050 to 0.065 inch. A #2 square bit will not seat properly in a recess that size, so keep a #1 in the gun for these.
2) Will a #6 x 3/4 in. Type A tapping screw bite into sheet metal without a pilot hole?
The JTSS2 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point, which is the sharp, spaced-thread form made for thin sheet metal and it will start in a punched or drilled hole without tapping. Thread count is 18 per inch to the ASME B18.6.4 thread standard. In heavier gauge steel you still want a pilot hole sized to the screw; the gimlet point starts the screw, it does not drill.
3) Do Metallics JTSS2 tapping screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?
No. The JTSS2 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries domestic-sourcing requirements, these screws will not satisfy them and you need a domestically produced fastener.
4) Can I use these screws outdoors or in a damp location?
The JTSS2 is carbon steel with a zinc plating, which handles indoor and dry locations fine but offers only light corrosion protection. For wet locations, exterior runs, coastal air, or anywhere washdown happens, specify a stainless fastener instead. Zinc-plated steel will eventually bloom in those conditions.
5) How many Metallics JTSS2 screws come in a pack?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. If you need a different size or a different count, Metallics offers other sizes and quantities by request.
6) Will these screws snap when driven with an impact driver?
Torsional strength is 24 lb-in minimum, with case hardness at Rockwell C28-38 from AISI 1016-1024 steel. That is adequate for hand drivers and a clutched screw gun on sheet metal and box work. A high-torque impact driver can exceed 24 lb-in on a #6 screw, so dial the torque back or use a drill on a low clutch setting.
7) What are these Metallics square drive tapping screws normally used for?
Metallics lists the JTSS2 for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. In practice that means mounting straps, brackets, plates, duct accessories and enclosures to sheet metal. The square recess is the reason electricians favour them, the bit stays put and lets you drive one-handed overhead.
