1) Will the Klein Tools CL100 clamp meter measure the 480V three-phase feeders in my building?
No. The CL100 tops out at 600V AC and 600V DC, so it covers 480V circuits, but only up to that 600V ceiling. Current measurement is AC only, to 600A through the clamp jaw. If you need DC amps or anything above 600V, the CL100 is the wrong meter.
2) Does the Klein CL100 read DC current, or only AC amps?
AC amps only. The clamp on the CL100 measures AC current to 600A. Its DC capability is voltage, to 600V DC. Anyone metering a DC solar string, a battery bank, or vehicle circuits needs a true DC-capable clamp instead.
3) Can I use the CL100 clamp meter to ring out continuity and check a circuit is dead?
Both, yes. The CL100 has audible continuity with a loud buzzer, so you can ring out a run without watching the screen, plus a diode test. For verifying dead, use the voltage function, which defaults to AC on power up, up to 600V AC.
4) Is the Klein CL100 any use in a dark panel room or a crawlspace?
That is what the work light and backlit display are for on the CL100. The work light stays on through every function selection rather than dropping out when you turn the dial, and data hold freezes a reading so you can pull the clamp out of a crowded panel and then read it.
5) What resistance range does the Klein CL100 cover for testing motor windings or a ballast?
Resistance on the CL100 goes to 20M ohm, which covers ordinary winding, element, and ballast checks as well as high-resistance reads on a suspect connection. It is not an insulation tester, so megger work on motor insulation still needs a dedicated instrument.
