1) Will a Milbank U2594-X meter socket work on a 3-phase 320 amp service?
That is exactly what the U2594-X is built for: a single-position, 7-terminal ringless socket rated 320 continuous amperes, 3 phase, 600 volts AC at 60 hertz. The 7-jaw configuration is what makes it a 3-phase socket. If your service is single phase you need a 4-jaw or 5-jaw socket instead, not this one.
2) Does a ringless meter socket need a sealing ring, and how do I know my utility accepts one?
Ringless means there is no separate sealing ring around the meter; the closing plate itself covers and seals the meter opening, and the U2594-X ships with the large closing plate. Utilities specify one style or the other in their service handbook, so confirm your serving utility takes ringless before you set it. This particular socket is also built to the Alliant Energy specification, and a U2594-X-K7-ALT version is offered for that utility as well.
3) Which Milbank U2594-X version do I order if the utility requires a barrel lock?
Order the U2594-X-BLG, which comes with a 7/8 inch barrel lock provision. If your utility seals with a wire seal through knockouts instead, the U2594-X-IL has 7/16 inch knockout lock provisions. The plain U2594-X is the standard build with neither. All three are the same 320 ampere, 7 terminal, lever bypass socket underneath.
4) Can I bring the service conductors in from underground, or does it have to be overhead?
Either works. Cable entry on the U2594-X is set up for overhead, underground, and side wireway, so a lateral coming up from below, a mast drop from above, or a feed from an adjacent gutter all land in the same enclosure. The large closing plate arrangement is what accommodates the hub for an overhead entry.
