Viega 77038 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Viega 77038 ProPress elbow work on 1-1/2 inch copper tube?
Yes. The Viega 77038 is a 45 degree elbow with 1-1/2 inch press ends on both sides, so it joins two runs of 1-1/2 inch copper tube. Both ends are press connections (P1 x P2), meaning the tube slides in and the joint is made with a press tool and jaws sized for 1-1/2 inch ProPress, not with solder or threads.
2) Do I need solder or a torch to install a Viega 77038 elbow?
No open flame. The 77038 is pressed, not soldered, so it goes in with a press tool and 1-1/2 inch jaws. That is the usual reason it gets specified on occupied-building work and tenant retrofits where a hot work permit is a problem. Tube ends still need to be cut square, deburred and fully inserted to the stop before pressing.
3) Can I use a ProPress 45 degree copper elbow on PEX or galvanized steel pipe?
No. The 77038 is a copper press fitting with press ends on both sides, so it is for copper tube only. PEX needs its own press or crimp system, and galvanized steel needs threaded or grooved fittings. If one leg of your run is something other than copper tube, you need a transition fitting at that point, not this elbow.
4) What does Smart Connect technology on the Viega 77038 actually do for me on the job?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-connection feature: an unpressed joint leaks visibly under test pressure instead of holding, so a missed press shows up during pressure testing rather than after the walls close. On a large job with dozens of 1-1/2 inch joints, that is how the crew finds the one fitting that got skipped.
5) Should I use a 45 degree elbow or two 90s to offset a 1-1/2 inch copper line?
Use a pair of 45s like the 77038 when you need to jog around an obstruction or swing a riser over. Two 45s give a shallower turn than two 90s, so there is less pressure drop and less turbulence in the run, and the offset distance is easier to tune by changing the length of tube between them. Reach for 90s only when you genuinely need a square turn.
6) Is the sealing element included with the Viega 77038, or do I order it separately?
The 77038 ships as a complete copper press elbow with its sealing element already seated in both press ends. Nothing else to buy for the fitting itself. What you do need on site is the press tool and the correct 1-1/2 inch jaw set, plus a cutter and deburring tool for the tube ends.
