Viega 78192 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does "no stop" mean on the Viega 78192 ProPress coupling, and when would I use it instead of a coupling with a stop?
A no-stop coupling has no internal shoulder, so the tube can slide all the way through the fitting body. That's what you want for repair work and tie-ins where you can't spring the pipe apart: slide the coupling over an existing run, position it over the cut, then press both ends. A coupling with a stop sets insertion depth for you, which is easier on new construction but useless when both pipe ends are fixed. With the 78192 you have to mark your own insertion depth on each side before pressing.
2) What size copper tube does the Viega 78192 ProPress coupling join?
It joins 1-1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inch, a straight same-size coupling with press ends on both sides. The body is copper, so it's for copper tubing systems, not steel or PEX.
3) Can I use this coupling to repair a copper line without cutting the pipe loose from the wall?
That's the case it's built for. Because there's no stop inside, you cut out the bad section, slide the no-stop coupling fully onto one side, bring in the replacement or butt the pipe ends, then reposition so the tube is engaged at both ends to your marked depth and press. Both press ends take 1-1/2 inch copper, so you need your repair piece in the same size.
4) What is Smart Connect and do I still need to pressure test the joint?
Smart Connect is a deliberate feature in the sealing element that lets an unpressed connection leak during test, so a joint you missed shows itself instead of hiding behind a sealed-looking fitting. It does not replace testing, it's what makes the test useful. Pressure test the system and walk the run.
5) I need to order the right part number for a 1-1/2 inch Viega no-stop press coupling. What is it?
Viega part number 78192, a 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch copper ProPress coupling without stop. Order by that MPN; Viega's slip and stop couplings in the same size are separate numbers and are not interchangeable in a repair.
6) Where is the Viega 78192 made?
Made in Germany. That matters on specs and submittals where country of origin has to be declared, and on jobs with domestic-content restrictions, where a German-made fitting will not qualify.
