Viega 79755 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Viega 79755 ProPress union press-to-press, or does one end thread?
It is not a press x press union. The 79755 is configured P x MPT, meaning one end is a ProPress crimp socket for 2 inch copper tube and the other is a 2 inch male pipe thread. Use it where you need to transition from a pressed copper run to a threaded connection such as a valve, pump, or equipment tapping, and still be able to break the joint later. If you need press on both sides, you need the press x press version of the union instead.
2) Is the Viega 79755 union lead free for potable water?
It is a Zero Lead bronze body, which is what Viega calls its low lead alloy for potable water fittings. Body material is bronze and the part is made in Germany.
3) Can I use the Viega 79755 union on steel or PEX?
The press side is a copper-tube press socket sized for 2 inch copper, so it does not press onto steel or PEX. The threaded 2 inch MPT side will mate with any 2 inch female pipe thread, including steel, which is the usual way this union is used to tie copper into an existing threaded steel or equipment connection.
4) What does Smart Connect on this Viega ProPress union actually do for the installer?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-connection feature: an unpressed fitting leaks visibly during pressure test so it gets found on the floor instead of behind a wall. On a 2 inch union like the 79755 that matters, because a missed crimp on a large line is an expensive callback. It does not replace pressing, you still crimp the press end with the correct 2 inch jaw or ring and actuator.
5) Do I need thread sealant on the MPT side of the Viega 79755?
Yes on the threaded side, no on the press side. The MPT end is a standard male pipe thread and gets sealant or PTFE tape like any threaded joint. The press end is sealed by the factory-installed EPDM sealing element inside the socket, so nothing is applied there, just deburr the tube, mark insertion depth, and crimp.
6) What is the manufacturer part number to order the 2 inch Viega ProPress bronze union?
Viega part number 79755. That is the 2 inch x 2 inch Zero Lead bronze ProPress union with Smart Connect, press by male pipe thread.
