8-32 x 7/8 in. Socket Head Hex Cap Screws - Alloy Steel Black - 100qty
Additional Notes
- Other sizes and quantities available by request | Cap screws of a length 3D or greater, where D equals the nominal diameter of the screw, are subject to tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction of area testing.
Features
- Supplies greater tensile strength than equivalent sizes of Grade-5 or Grade-8 hex head cap screws while requiring less surface area or counterbore since the fastener is intenally wrenched.
- Socket head with Hex Drive
- Elongation is 10% minimum (applies to machined specimens of lenglh at least 4D where D equals the nominal diameter of the screw) and Reduction of Area is 33% minimum (applies to machined specimens)
- Alloy Steel Black Material
- 8-32 Diameter, 7/8" Length

Metallics JSHC878 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is an 8-32 socket head cap screw stronger than a Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex bolt?
Yes. The alloy steel JSHC878 is rated at 180,000 psi minimum tensile and 162,000 psi minimum yield, which is above equivalent sizes of Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head cap screws, and it does it in less surface area because the wrenching is internal. Hardness is Rockwell C39.
2) Will an 8-32 socket head cap screw thread into my existing 8-32 tapped hole or nut?
It will. The JSHC878 is cut 8-32 with 32 threads per inch in the UN (unified national) thread form, which is the standard 8-32 machine screw thread used on electrical boxes, enclosures and device mounting hardware. Any 8-32 tapped hole or 8-32 nut takes it. Thread length to work with is 7/8 inch overall.
3) Will a black alloy steel cap screw hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
Plan on dry or protected locations. These are alloy steel with a plain black finish, which is a strength-first material rather than a corrosion-resistant one, so for exterior, wet or washdown work step to a stainless or zinc-plated fastener instead. Indoors, the listed field applications are electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work.
4) Are these Metallics socket head cap screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JSHC878 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it.
5) What size hex key do I need to drive a Metallics JSHC878 8-32 socket head cap screw?
The JSHC878 uses an internal hex (Allen) drive, not a slot or Phillips. Head width runs 0.262 to 0.270 inch with a head height of 0.159 to 0.164 inch, so the counterbore only has to clear a hair over a quarter inch. Because it is internally wrenched, you can set it in a tighter pocket than a hex head screw of the same thread.
6) Can I buy a few of these 8-32 cap screws, or do they only come in a full jar?
Minimum order is 100 pieces, supplied in a jar. If you need a different length, diameter or pack count in the Metallics SHC socket head cap screw line, other sizes and quantities can be had by request.
7) Does the Metallics JSHC878 cap screw meet ASME B18.3?
Yes, the dimensional standard is ASME B18.3-2012, the socket head cap screw spec, so head and socket geometry are interchangeable with any other B18.3 8-32 x 7/8 socket head screw. Minimum elongation is 10 percent and minimum reduction of area 33 percent on machined specimens.
8) Why are longer socket head cap screws subject to extra strength testing?
Cap screws with a length of 3D or greater, where D is the nominal screw diameter, get tested for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction of area. At 8-32 (0.164 inch nominal) a 7/8 inch length is well past that 3D threshold, so the published 180,000 psi tensile and 162,000 psi yield figures are backed by that testing rather than being nominal material values.
