8-32 x 5/8 in. Socket Head Hex Cap Screws - Alloy Steel Black - 100qty
Features
- Supplies greater tensile strength than equivalent sizes of Grade-5 or Grade-8 hex head cap screws while requiring less surface area or counterbore since the fastener is intenally wrenched.
- Socket head with Hex Drive
- Elongation is 10% minimum (applies to machined specimens of lenglh at least 4D where D equals the nominal diameter of the screw) and Reduction of Area is 33% minimum (applies to machined specimens)
- Alloy Steel Black Material
- 8-32 Diameter, 5/8" Length
Additional Notes
- Other sizes and quantities available by request | Cap screws of a length 3D or greater, where D equals the nominal diameter of the screw, are subject to tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction of area testing.

Metallics JSHC858 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is an 8-32 socket head cap screw stronger than a Grade 8 hex head screw of the same size?
Yes. The Metallics JSHC858 is alloy steel rated at 180,000 psi minimum tensile and 162,000 psi minimum yield, which is above what a same-size Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head cap screw delivers, and it does it in less surface area because the drive is internal. Hardness is Rockwell C39. For a loaded bracket or panel where you can't fit a wrench on the head, that combination is the reason to specify socket head over hex head.
2) Will an 8-32 socket head cap screw thread into a standard 8-32 tapped hole or nut?
Yes. The JSHC858 is cut 8-32 UN thread at 32 threads per inch, which is the standard unified coarse pitch for a No. 8 screw, so it mates with any 8-32 tapped hole, nut, or insert. Thread engagement is what matters with the 5/8 in. length: in a tapped hole shallower than your material stack allows, the screw will bottom out before it clamps.
3) Do these screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA-funded project?
No. The JSHC858 socket head cap screw is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements, you'll need a domestically produced socket cap screw instead.
4) What size hex key do I need to drive the Metallics JSHC858 socket head cap screw?
It's an internally wrenched socket head with a hex drive, so you're turning it with a hex key, not a wrench on the outside of the head. The socket depth is 0.077 in. and the head measures 0.262 to 0.27 in. across, so a standard 8-32 socket cap screw hex key applies. The big advantage of the internal drive is that you don't need wrench clearance around the head, just a counterbore wide enough for the 0.27 in. head.
5) Are these socket cap screws sold individually or do I have to buy a full jar?
They ship in a jar, with a minimum order of 100, so you're buying by the jar rather than picking out singles. For an electrical or mechanical shop doing repeat panel and bracket work, a jar on the shelf is the practical buy. Metallics also makes other lengths and quantities in the SHC socket head series available on request.
6) Is the black finish on these alloy steel cap screws suitable for outdoor or wet locations?
The finish is black on alloy steel, which is the standard black oxide style look for socket cap screws and is intended for dry indoor service. It is not a corrosion barrier the way zinc or stainless is. For exterior, damp, or washdown locations, specify a plated or stainless socket cap screw instead of the black alloy version.
7) What trades actually use the Metallics SHC socket head cap screws?
They're stocked for the electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning trades. Typical use is fastening equipment, brackets, panels, and enclosures where the head has to sit in a counterbore or in a spot with no room to swing a wrench. A single jar covers the 8-32 x 5/8 in. size, part number JSHC858.
8) Does the JSHC858 meet the elongation and reduction of area requirements for tested cap screws?
Elongation is 10 percent minimum and reduction of area is 33 percent minimum on machined specimens. Note that cap screws of a length 3D or greater, where D is the nominal screw diameter, are the ones subject to tensile, yield, elongation and reduction of area testing. At 8-32 (0.164 in. nominal) a 5/8 in. length is well past 3D, so these fall inside that tested range.
