1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTSS11 square drive tapping screws?
A #2 square (Robertson) bit. The JTSS11 calls for driver size 2R, and the recess measures 0.112 inch across flats with a gaging depth of 0.060 to 0.075 inch, so a worn or undersized bit will cam out. Keep a couple of #2 square bits in the pouch if you are running a jar of 100.
2) Is a Type A tapping screw the right choice for sheet metal, or do I need a self-drilling screw?
Type A is a sheet metal tapping screw with a gimlet (pointed) tip. It forms its own thread in a pre-punched or pre-drilled hole in thin sheet, and the point helps it find and start the hole, but it will not drill its own pilot through metal. If you need to go through gauge steel with no pilot, you want a self-drilling (Type BSD / TEK style) screw instead. For knockout boxes, straps, and sheet work where the hole is already there, the JTSS11 Type A at 15 threads per inch is what you want.
