Metallics JRDS1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JRDS1 deck screws?
A #2 square drive bit. The JRDS1 uses a square recess, 0.110 to 0.113 inch wide and 0.064 to 0.075 inch deep, which is why it holds the bit and resists cam-out under high torque. Stock spare #2 square bits if you are running a full jar of 100.
2) Do these Metallics deck screws need a pilot hole in treated lumber?
No pilot hole in normal wood. The JRDS1 has a Type 17 point, which is the auger-cut tip that clears a chip as it drives, so it starts on its own and reduces splitting near board ends. Coarse UNC threads bite softwood and treated lumber directly. Near a very close edge or in dense hardwood, a pilot is still smart practice.
3) Will these screws hold up outdoors or near the coast?
They are built for exterior exposure. The JRDS1 carries a green ceramic All-Weather coating over zinc, rated to withstand a 500 hour salt-spray test. That covers decks, exterior trim, and outdoor equipment mounting. For direct, continuous saltwater immersion, stainless is the better call.
4) Do these screws qualify for a federally funded or Buy American job?
Yes. The JRDS1 deck screw is flagged as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement file usually needs on a fastener line item.
5) Why would an electrician or HVAC tech buy deck screws instead of standard wood screws?
That is exactly the market this one is aimed at. The RDS series is stocked for the electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning trades, where you are hanging strut backing, plywood backer board, strapping, and outdoor equipment stands. The coated finish survives outdoor condenser pads and damp mechanical rooms, and the square drive runs off an impact driver without stripping.
6) How are the Metallics JRDS1 screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 count is the order minimum. Jar packaging is practical on a truck or cart, no torn boxes of loose screws in the bottom of a bag.
7) What steel are these screws made from, and will the head snap off under an impact driver?
The JRDS1 is made to AISI 1080, a high carbon steel, which is what gives a deck screw its drive torque capacity. Even so, carbon steel deck screws are not structural fasteners, so do not substitute them for a rated structural screw or lag in load-bearing framing connections. Back off the impact driver clutch when the bugle head reaches flush.
8) Is the head on these deck screws flat enough to finish flush with the surface?
Yes. A bugle head has a tapered, countersinking underside, so it pulls itself flush into wood with no pre-countersinking. Head height on the JRDS1 runs 0.020 to 0.039 inch and head width 0.315 to 0.363 inch. Bear in mind there is no single industry dimensional standard for bugle head deck screws, so slight deviation within those ranges is normal.
