No pilot hole. The JTEKD14V is a Type BSD self-drilling and tapping screw, so the drill point cuts its own hole and the 18 threads per inch UNC thread taps it in the same pass. One driver, one pass, within the 0.035 to 0.100 in. panel range.

Keep it to dry interior work. These are AISI 1016-1024 carbon steel with a zinc plated finish, which handles indoor humidity but is not a marine or exterior corrosion finish. For wet, coastal, or chemically aggressive locations, specify a stainless self-drilling screw instead.

Both are flagged compliant on this screw, which matters on federally funded work. Country of origin is listed as multiple. Dimensionally it is built to ASME B18.6.3-2010 with threads to SAE J78-2013, the two standards a spec writer typically calls out for hex washer head self-drilling screws.

Where it falls short is stacked assemblies: drilling through a device bracket plus a stud plus a layer of sheathing can consume the length before the threads fully engage the far side. Measure your stack-up and move to a longer screw if the combined thickness approaches 1 in.

Drill time is 2.5 seconds for a 1 mm thick plate, and minimum torques are the same for stainless and steel self-drill screws. On a repetitive run of panels or strut, that is the number to plan labor against.
